William “Bill” Harrah
Bill Harrah built his casino business in Reno and Lake Tahoe, yet his surname became one of the best-known hotel names on the Las Vegas Strip. The distinction is important: the Strip property took the Harrah's name in 1992, fourteen years after his death.
Born William F. Harrah in Pasadena in 1911, he grew up in Southern California. His father operated a gambling business on the Venice pier, giving the younger Harrah an introduction to the trade. He eventually took over that operation and moved to Reno in 1937. A modest bingo business developed into a much larger casino enterprise. Harrah's career illustrates the importance of northern Nevada to the state's gambling industry, even for visitors who encounter the name first in Las Vegas.
He expanded into Lake Tahoe and developed a bus program bringing customers from northern California to his casinos. UNLV's corporate-archive history describes a management approach that delegated daily operations while Harrah devoted considerable time to collecting vehicles. His automobile collection became one of the most celebrated parts of his life outside the casinos. Business growth and heavy personal spending also shaped the company's finances. Harrah's went public in 1971 and reached the New York Stock Exchange in 1973, an important step in the emergence of publicly traded gaming companies. Harrah died in 1978, leaving both a casino business and a name that would travel well beyond the places where he had personally worked.
The Las Vegas property followed a separate history. It was associated with the Holiday Casino and the operators Shelby and Claudine Williams before coming under the management of Harrah's as a Holiday Inn subsidiary. The Harrah's Las Vegas name arrived in 1992. Visitors following Bill Harrah's story should therefore resist reading the building as a casino he personally established on the Strip. Its connection is through the business and brand that continued after him. That layered history is part of its interest: a northern Nevada entrepreneur's surname attached to a southern Nevada property with its own earlier owners, architecture and identity. Harrah's biography connects those two gambling centers while keeping the man, the later corporation and the individual Las Vegas hotel distinct.
