The STRAT opened as the Stratosphere on April 30, 1996, bringing Bob Stupak’s observation-tower project into operation beside the earlier Vegas World hotel-casino. Its history combines new construction with reused hotel buildings. The STRAT name, formally celebrated in January 2020, belongs to the renovated resort.

Vegas World and the tower project

Stupak had operated the space-themed Vegas World here before developing the much taller observation tower. Vegas World closed on February 1, 1995, for work on the new complex. The later resort incorporated its hotel towers; it was not a complete clearance of every earlier building. UNLV’s Stupak collection records planning, construction and promotional material for both ventures. The selected 1995 photograph shows an earlier hotel tower beside the new observation tower and its construction crane.

An opening before the work was finished

The Stratosphere’s opening separated the public debut of the tower and casino complex from the completion of every planned facility. Contemporary reporting describes an April 29 invitation party followed by public admission at midnight. The resort struggled financially and entered bankruptcy in 1997. Carl Icahn gained control in 1998, and additional hotel-room construction was completed in 2001, according to the published historical account. The tower’s arrival did not end the property’s building work or financial uncertainty.

Becoming the STRAT

Golden Entertainment acquired the Stratosphere with American Casino & Entertainment Properties on October 20, 2017. Its later renovation began in 2018 and changed the casino, registration area, rooms, restaurants and observation-deck spaces. The company reported the major planned work complete at the end of 2019; its January 22, 2020 announcement marked the formal transition to the STRAT identity. Those dates describe different stages of the same project.

Reading the later frontage photograph

The STRAT remains an operating hotel-casino in October 2026, at 2000 South Las Vegas Boulevard, north of Sahara Avenue. Its observation tower is part of a larger resort, not the hotel’s only building. The main illustration presents the observation tower and entrance arches as an architectural interpretation, rather than a current access guide.

Locating the resort

The map marks a representative point within the current hotel-casino building. It does not identify the observation tower’s exact base, an entrance, the whole resort grounds or the boundaries of the earlier Vegas World.

What remains uncertain

  • UNLV’s collection-level Stupak biography gives dates that differ from other histories. This page uses the tourism chronology for February 1, 1995 closure and April 30, 1996 opening; the collection’s dates are not silently treated as an operating timeline.
  • The extent of every Vegas World building retained or changed within the later resort is not reconstructed as a surveyed footprint. Hotel-building reuse does not mean the whole Stratosphere complex was simply a renamed Vegas World.
  • The 1997 bankruptcy, 1998 Icahn control and 2001 room-completion sequence is summarized from a secondary history. The cited original newspaper bodies were not all accessible for independent reading.
  • The 1995 construction image is later than Vegas World’s casino closure and earlier than Stratosphere’s opening. Neither that photograph nor the main illustration establishes current visitor access.

Replaced Vegas World

1996

Vegas World’s casino closed on February 1, 1995, during development of Stratosphere, which opened on April 30, 1996. The larger successor resort incorporated renovated Vegas World hotel buildings alongside new construction. This relationship describes the replacement of an independent resort operation with an expanded complex; it does not imply that every earlier building was demolished or that the observation tower was simply a renamed Vegas World hotel. Stratosphere’s later renovation and STRAT name belong to the successor property.

Historical source — UNLV MS-01016, collection description and historical note, identifies Vegas World and Stratosphere as Stupak’s two resorts and records remaining-building/site reuse. Its conflicting dates are not adopted: the LVCVA history booklet, PDF page 5, supplies February 1, 1995 closure and April 30, 1996 opening. The secondary histories and dated 1995 Stuart Seeger construction photograph provide additional context; both Property histories retain the source links.

  • The resorts did not have identical footprints; the later complex included new construction and retained earlier hotel structures.
  • The exact extent of every former casino wall or reused building is not reconstructed as a survey.
  • The relationship uses the successor opening year, 1996. Closure and construction began earlier; the STRAT name was formally celebrated in 2020.
