Park MGM (formerly Monte Carlo)

Park MGM began as the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, which opened on June 21, 1996. The continuing resort at 3770 South Las Vegas Boulevard changed its name and character through a major renovation in 2018. Keeping those two names together explains the site more accurately than treating Monte Carlo as a demolished casino replaced by an unrelated hotel.

The Monte Carlo years

The original resort was a partnership between Mirage Resorts and Circus Circus Enterprises. Its European-inspired presentation promised an elegant setting at prices aimed at a broad audience. Lance Burton’s magic show was part of the opening identity. MGM’s later announcement of his final 2010 engagement describes a fourteen-year association with the resort.

Part of the former Dunes grounds

Monte Carlo also belongs to the larger history of the Dunes grounds. UNLV’s corporate-history note places it on the former Dunes site, and a contemporary newspaper retrospective identifies it as occupying a portion of that land. Bellagio occupies another part of the former resort’s much larger setting. These are partial site relationships, not identical hotel footprints.

The 2008 fire and reopening

On January 25, 2008, a rooftop fire closed Monte Carlo. MGM’s filing records a February 15 reopening with only part of the room inventory available, while more extensive work continued elsewhere in the hotel. The interruption and repairs were a significant episode within the same operating property, years before the Park MGM conversion.

Becoming Park MGM

The later transformation unfolded in stages. Park Theater opened in December 2016; the Park MGM name appeared in May 2018 while more work was still planned. MGM and Sydell Group reshaped rooms, public spaces and dining, retaining and restoring some Monte Carlo decorative elements. The current operator fact sheet dates completion of the wider reimagining to 2019. A name-change date therefore does not mark completion of every component.

NoMad becomes The Reserve

Park MGM and NoMad reopened after the pandemic closure on September 30, 2020, with a smoke-free casino policy. A further branding change affected the hotel within the hotel: in December 2025 MGM announced NoMad’s transition to The Reserve at Park MGM, effective December 17. Current operator material confirms The Reserve occupies the tower’s top four floors. It did not replace the Park MGM name for the whole resort.

The resort and photograph today

Park MGM remains an operating hotel-casino. The February 2019 photograph records its earlier post-conversion exterior and theater signage; ARIA and the tall Waldorf Astoria building behind it are separate properties. The image predates the Reserve name and is not evidence of current signs or show schedules.

Bob Shemeligian, June 21, 1996: previous-night opening celebration, Mirage/Circus Circus partnership and European-style broad-market strategy. Indexed article body read; direct reader returned 403. June 21 public opening corroborated by the operator’s 2010 account. Original prices are not current promises.

  2. Lance Burton’s long association

Operator announcement, July 19, 2010: fourteen-year run from opening day, June 21, 1996, and final performance scheduled September 4. Supports the association and announced last engagement, not independent proof of every performance.

  3. The former Dunes grounds

UNLV MGM Mirage Records on Mandalay Resort Group, MS-00511, Historical Note: Gold Strike acquisition brought a half interest in the developing Monte Carlo, which opened in 1996 on the former Dunes site. Institutional summary, not a parcel survey or inspection of individual archival records. Corroborated by the newspaper retrospective below.

  4. Monte Carlo’s site and original presentation

Mary Manning, January 25, 2008 retrospective: June 21, 1996 opening, partnership and a 44-acre property on a portion of former Dunes grounds. Indexed article body read; direct reader returned 403. Historical acreage is the source’s description, not a current survey.

  5. The fire and phased reopening

MGM Mirage 2007 Form 10-K, Note 20, Subsequent Events: rooftop fire January 25, 2008; reopening February 15 with about 1,200 rooms, with further reopening and redesign in phases. Targeted actual filing passage read. Not every room reopened on February 15.

  6. The new Park MGM name and phased conversion

Operator release, May 9, 2018: Monte Carlo shed its name that week while more work was planned; Park Theater opened in December 2016; MGM/Sydell partnership and retained decorative elements. Supports a phased renovation, not an exact date when every component was finished.

  7. The September2020 reopening

Operator statement, September 30, 2020: reopening that day after the pandemic closure, with a smoke-free casino policy. No independent industry-wide first-ranking audit.

  8. NoMad’s announced Reserve transition

December 1, 2025 release announces the full NoMad rebrand effective December 17, with 293 rooms and renamed venues. The current fact sheet and live Reserve site corroborate later use of the name; no claim that every venue changed on the same exact day.

  9. The current Park MGM and Reserve fact sheet

Current newsroom-linked PDF downloaded and text read October 20, 2026, pages 1–2: two hotel experiences under one roof, Park’s 3770 address, wider conversion completed in 2019, and Reserve on the top four floors. The live Reserve site corroborates the current name. Prices and show schedules are not adopted.

  10. The mapped building area

Coordinates 36.10473,-115.17524, fresh source/native read October 20, 2026. Existing qualified Place v1 reused unchanged; not an entrance, full grounds, historic parcel or verified route.

  11. The dated exterior photograph

Own-work Commons photograph, capture date and CC BY-SA 4.0 verified October 20, 2026. Exact 4032 × 3024 original: bytes, hash and pixels inspected. Dated architecture context, not current signs or access.

Monte Carlo and Park MGM are the same continuing hotel-casino, renamed and substantially renovated. They are not separate casinos linked by a false demolition/replacement.

May2018 name change, later2018 openings and operator2019 wider-project completion describe phases; no single day for all elements is asserted.

NoMad/The Reserve describes the hotel experience on the top four floors within Park MGM, not a replacement of the entire resort. December17,2025 was the announced full-rebrand effective date; current material confirms the brand, not every venue’s exact transition day.

The former Dunes connection concerns a portion of larger grounds, not the exact earlier hotel/casino walls or an identical parcel.

The February4,2019 photograph predates the Reserve name and shows historical theater signs; ARIA and Waldorf Astoria in the background are separate properties.

Replaced Dunes Hotel and Casino

1996

Monte Carlo opened in 1996 on a portion of the former Dunes grounds and later became Park MGM through renovation and a name change. Bellagio occupies another part of the former Dunes site. Park MGM does not reuse the old Dunes hotel tower, and the two properties do not have identical footprints.

Historical source — UNLV MGM Mirage Records on Mandalay Resort Group, MS-00511, Historical Note: Monte Carlo opened in 1996 on the former Dunes site. Mary Manning, Las Vegas Sun, January 25, 2008, More about the Monte Carlo, independently identifies a portion of former Dunes grounds (indexed body read; direct reader returned 403). MGM’s May 9, 2018 release establishes the continuing Monte Carlo–Park MGM renovation and rename.

  • The relationship describes partial reuse of larger former Dunes grounds, not a surveyed overlap of the original hotel/casino buildings or an identical parcel.
  • 1996 is Monte Carlo’s opening year, not the date every Dunes building was demolished or all later redevelopment completed.
