Golden Gate Hotel and Casino

Golden Gate’s hotel began in 1906 as the Hotel Nevada, on the corner of Fremont and Main streets. The building followed the railroad town’s 1905 land auction, when the future hotel frontage sold for $1,750. Its electric lighting and steam heating belonged to a new Las Vegas, long before the Strip’s resort skyline existed.

The Sal Sagev hotel

The hotel expanded and took the name Sal Sagev in 1931, the year Nevada legalized gambling again. The name reverses the letters of Las Vegas. That early hotel history should be distinguished from the later Golden Gate casino business: accounts of the extent and continuity of gambling inside the earlier hotel differ.

A casino name, then a hotel name

In 1955 a group of partners from San Francisco established Golden Gate Casino at the historic property. The hotel initially kept the Sal Sagev name while the separately operated casino used Golden Gate. Las Vegas Advisor’s history, drawing on local historical research, dates the partners’ purchase of the hotel to 1974, when the combined property became Golden Gate Hotel and Casino. The familiar name therefore came in stages rather than appearing with the original hotel in 1906.

The shrimp-cocktail association

The casino developed a second kind of Downtown landmark: its shrimp cocktail. The hotel credits managing partner Italo Ghelfi with introducing the promotion in 1959. It became part of the property’s identity alongside the illuminated signs and small-scale hotel frontage on Fremont Street.

New towers and neighboring land

A major renewal in 2012 added a five-story suite tower and a new lobby. Architect Gensler describes preserving the historic exterior while adding modern construction and lighting. In 2017 another expansion extended the casino and outdoor bar onto land formerly occupied by La Bayou, which Derek Stevens had acquired in 2016. The expansion added a neighboring former casino site to the existing hotel and casino.

A different gaming floor

The gaming floor changed again in September 2025. Trade coverage quoted Stevens and electronic-game manufacturer Interblock describing a new electronic table-game area, replacing the live-dealer era. The hotel and casino remain in operation at One Fremont Street.

1906 identifies the original hotel opening, not the start of the Golden Gate casino name. The casino began under that name in 1955, and the hotel/casino name was consolidated later. No exact original opening day is adopted.

The scale and continuity of gambling in the earlier Hotel Nevada/Sal Sagev period are disputed in the historical account. No claim of continuous casino operation since 1906 is made.

The 2017 expansion occupied former La Bayou land adjoining the hotel. The current mapped hotel-building point does not survey the original footprint or the whole expanded casino.

Replaced La Bayou

2016 – 2017

La Bayou closed in June 2016. Its former land was incorporated into Golden Gate’s completed 2017 casino and bar expansion. Golden Gate’s existing hotel and casino predated this addition: this is a replacement of the adjoining La Bayou use by part of Golden Gate, not a rename or the construction of the whole Golden Gate property.

Historical source — Owner-issued September 5, 2017 release: completed expansion by Dez Motif/MOSER; additions occupy former La Bayou land acquired in 2016. KNPR June 29, 2016 published programme text separately confirms completed closure.

  • Partial former-site absorption; the relationship does not claim matching whole-property footprints or a survey of former walls.
  • Year precision describes the closure-to-expansion sequence. Golden Gate’s 1906 hotel origins are separate from the 2017 addition.
