A brief history of Fremont Hotel and Casino

The Fremont Hotel and Casino opened on May 18, 1956, bringing an early high-rise hotel to Downtown Las Vegas. Its tower stood above a casino on the street that gave the property its name. The hotel survives at 200 Fremont Street, where its frontage now meets the Fremont Street Experience pedestrian district.
The original design gave the tower a practical response to desert sunlight. A January 1957 architectural trade advertisement credited architects Wayne McAllister and William C. Wagner and described angular porcelain-enamel sunshades outside the windows. Their repeating shapes formed a patterned facade as well as providing shade.
Boyd Gaming purchased the Fremont in 1985 alongside the Stardust. That transaction connected an established Downtown hotel with the company that had opened the California a decade earlier. It was an ownership change at the existing Fremont, not the opening of a replacement hotel or a rename of the Stardust. The two properties occupied separate sites, and their subsequent histories diverged: the Fremont remains in operation.
In November 2022 Boyd announced a new food hall as part of the hotel’s renewal. The proposed 13,150-square-foot dining space brought together six casual brands, including local and national operators. The announcement positioned quick meals as part of the hotel’s relationship with the busy pedestrian district outside. Its opening schedule was a plan at the time, rather than proof that the wider project was finished.
Boyd’s 2024 annual report supplies that later milestone: the Fremont renovation and expansion were completed in the fourth quarter of 2023. The company described an operating hotel with a new food hall and sportsbook beside the Fremont Street Experience. It also grouped the Fremont with the California and Main Street Station as Downtown properties serving visitors from Hawaii.
The Fremont’s story is therefore one of continued use and renewal at the same Downtown address. Its 1950s origins, later Boyd ownership and modern dining and gaming changes belong to successive chapters of one hotel and casino.

An operator anniversary release has a May 2023 webpage date but describes a 65th anniversary for a hotel opened in 1956. The explicit opening and 1985 purchase facts are used; the anniversary celebration is not assigned to 2023. The 2022 food-hall announcement is forward-looking; the later annual report establishes completion of the wider project in late 2023. Earlier operating-management arrangements are not equated with the verified 1985 purchase.
The 1957 material is a trade advertisement. Its description of sunshade materials and architect credits is used; its promotional height and maintenance claims are not treated as independently verified.
