The California Hotel and Casino opened on January 1, 1975, beginning the casino business that became Boyd Gaming. Sam Boyd and his son Bill established the Downtown property together. Its address is on Ogden Avenue, north of Fremont Street: this is the California Hotel, commonly called the Cal, rather than the former California Club casino on Fremont.

A connection across the Pacific

The hotel’s strongest connection developed across the Pacific. UNLV’s archival account of the Boyd family describes the California’s appeal to visitors from Hawaii and Sam Boyd’s marketing to that audience. A 2016 UNLV profile places the opening within the family’s broader story: Bill left his legal career to build the business with his father. That combination of a family venture and a returning visitor community gives the Cal a history different from the large themed resorts that later defined much of the Strip.

An identity that continues

The Hawaii connection remains visible in the hotel’s own presentation. Its May 2025 fact sheet describes a Hawaiian-oriented property and lists dining venues including Aloha Specialties and Holo Holo. The Cal’s menus and branding carry that relationship into the everyday experience of the hotel.

Refreshing the Cal

A substantial redesign changed the public spaces in 2016. Contemporary coverage reported a completed casino renovation and updated public areas, alongside new food and drink concepts introduced that year. Aloha Specialties, an established part of the hotel’s Hawaiian identity, was also renovated. The project refreshed an operating property rather than replacing it with a different casino.

Finished work and future plans

The same announcement distinguished finished work from what was still to come: renovation of the west tower’s guest rooms was planned for early 2017. That forward-looking statement does not by itself establish when those rooms were completed. The announcement records a staged renewal of an established hotel.

The California today

The California remains an operating Boyd hotel and casino. Its current website continues the Hawaiian theme, while its Downtown address places it within walking distance of the Fremont Street district. The hotel’s original name has endured through decades of changes in its rooms and public spaces.

What remains uncertain

  • The operator’s current Ogden Avenue address controls location. A UNLV collection historical note places the property at First and Fremont; that conflicting address is not adopted. The 2016 renovation announcement describes west-tower room work as planned for 2017, not proof of its completion. No exact date is assigned to later building expansions.
