The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino grew out of a Holiday Inn building completed in 1966. After a period as the Viscount Hotel, it adopted a Coney Island-inspired Boardwalk identity in 1989. It closed on January 9, 2006, and was imploded on May 9 that year for the CityCenter development.
The Boardwalk shows how a modest Strip hotel could change its identity without starting from a new building. The Holiday Inn, Viscount and Boardwalk names describe stages in that property’s history. The 1989 theme change and the 1966 building date are different milestones, followed by a complete change of scale when CityCenter replaced the site.
